Day by Day Itinerary
Depart Tanger (8:00 AM) and drive south along the Atlantic coast through the agricultural plains of Gharb. Brief stop in Larache — a charming Spanish-era town with a kasbah overlooking the sea. Continue to Rabat — Morocco's elegant capital. Visit the unfinished Hassan Tower (12th century minaret intended to be the world's tallest), the magnificent Mausoleum of Mohammed V (stunning example of Moroccan craftsmanship), the Kasbah des Oudaias with its Andalusian gardens, and the ancient Chellah necropolis where Roman and medieval Moroccan ruins coexist. Evening stroll in Rabat's vibrant ville nouvelle. Overnight in Rabat.
Optional morning stop in Casablanca to admire the exterior of the Hassan II Mosque — the world's third largest mosque built over the Atlantic Ocean. Continue to Meknes — Morocco's "Versailles" — visit the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the Moulay Ismail mausoleum, the vast underground granaries and stables of Heri es-Souani. Stop at Volubilis — the best-preserved Roman archaeological site in Morocco (UNESCO), with mosaics dating to 2nd century AD. Arrive in Fes by evening. Overnight in Fes.
Full morning guided tour of the legendary Fes el-Bali medina — the world's largest car-free urban area. Visit the Chouara tanneries (11th century, oldest in the world), Al-Attarine madrasa, Bou Inania madrasa, the Kairaouine mosque (world's oldest university, founded 859 AD), and the artisan souks. Afternoon drive back to Tanger or continue to your next destination. Arrive Tanger by evening.
