Departure from Fes (7:30 AM). Drive south through the spectacular Middle Atlas. Stop in Ifrane — Morocco's alpine resort at 1,665m, with its European-style chalets and manicured parks; then the Azrou cedar forest where wild Barbary macaques descend from century-old cedars to meet visitors. Lunch in Midelt, the "apple city" at 1,500m. Afternoon: enter the dramatic Ziz Gorges — 50km of sheer red-rock canyon carved by the Ziz River — one of Morocco's most spectacular natural passages. Cross the vast Ziz Valley palmery of ancient ksour and date palms. Arrive in Merzouga as the afternoon light turns the Erg Chebbi dunes gold. Mount your camel for the iconic sunset trek into the dunes — 150m high and glowing crimson. Arrive at the luxury Berber camp for a traditional tagine dinner, live Gnawa drumming around the fire, mint tea, and a night under an ocean of stars. Overnight in a Berber desert tent.

Rise before dawn to climb the great dunes and witness the Sahara sunrise — the silence is absolute, the colours from deep violet to burning gold extraordinary. Traditional Moroccan breakfast in camp. Full free day in the Erg Chebbi with choice of activities: 4×4 desert excursion to the flamingo salt lake (Dayet Srij); visit nomadic Tuareg families in their traditional tents; sandboarding; quad biking; visit Khamlia village (Gnawa music descendants of sub-Saharan slaves); fossil hunting in Erfoud (trilobites, ammonites from 400-million-year-old seabeds). Afternoon rest before the magical dusk light. Second night in the desert camp — a deeper sense of silence and immensity.

Third sunrise in the desert. After breakfast, drive west. Stop at Rissani — the ancient trading town, birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite royal dynasty. Continue to the extraordinary Todra Gorges — where 300m-high walls of rose and amber limestone narrow to just 10m wide above a cold, clear river. Walk through the canyon floor for 30 minutes, feeling the dramatic scale. Continue through the Tinghir oasis (50km of date palms) along the Dades Valley — the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" — with its ancient earthen towers in shades of terracotta and rose. Arrive in Boumalne Dades. Overnight in a guesthouse above the gorge.

Morning walk into the Dades Gorges — extraordinary "Monkey Finger" rock formations carved by centuries of erosion. Drive through the Rose Valley (Kelaat M'Gouna) — where thousands of Damascus rose bushes line the road; in spring (late April–May) the entire valley is pink and fragrant. Visit a rose oil cooperative. Pass through Skoura oasis (700-year-old palmery) to Ait Benhaddou — UNESCO World Heritage Site: Morocco's most dramatic ksar, a fortified earthen city with six kasbahs, backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel. Guided climb to the summit granary for panoramic views. Continue to Ouarzazate — "Hollywood of Africa" — for dinner. Optional visit to Atlas Film Studios (Gladiator sets still standing). Morning optional visit to the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate — a 19th-century Glaoui earthen palace with 300 rooms and a rooftop walk above the palmery. Begin the High Atlas crossing via the spectacular Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2,260m) — the highest paved road in North Africa. Stop at the summit for panoramic views of ridgelines stretching to the Sahara in one direction and the Atlantic in the other. Pass through Berber villages of pink and ochre earthen houses clinging to the mountainsides. Arrive in Marrakech mid-afternoon. Check into your riad. Free afternoon to explore: the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia minaret, or the souks. Overnight in Marrakech.

Full day guided tour of Marrakech's UNESCO-listed medina with your expert local guide. Morning: the Koutoubia Mosque (12th-century minaret, model for Seville's Giralda), the Bahia Palace (19th-century Andalusian masterpiece with 150 rooms and extraordinary zellije tilework), and the Saadian Tombs (rediscovered in 1917, containing the lavishly decorated tombs of the Saadian dynasty). Afternoon: the Jemaa el-Fna at its busiest — snake charmers, storytellers, musicians, henna artists — and the labyrinthine souks: spices, copper, leather, Berber carpets, silver jewellery, lanterns. Morning drive west along the argan-forest coast (2.5 hours) to Essaouira — the wind-swept blue-and-white UNESCO port city on the Atlantic. Cool ocean breezes, salt air, and a world apart from the heat of the south. Explore: the 18th-century sea ramparts (skala) with their bronze cannons; the working fishing port with vivid blue wooden boats; the whitewashed medina with its art galleries, thuya wood marquetry workshops, and ancient mellah. Essaouira hosted Jimi Hendrix in 1969 and features in Game of Thrones (as Astapor). Lunch of fresh grilled sardines or lobster in the port restaurants. Afternoon free to walk the 5km Atlantic beach. Morning free in Essaouira — a sunrise walk on the Atlantic beach, a final coffee on the sea ramparts, or last-minute shopping for thuya wood marquetry (a unique local craft using cedar-root inlaid with lemon wood and mother-of-pearl) and argan oil cosmetics. Return drive to Marrakech (2.5 hours), arriving early afternoon. Optional: a final stroll through the medina or visit to the Museum of Photography and Visual Arts. Drop-off at your Marrakech hotel, Menara airport, or the train station for Casablanca.
